Save the Cat!® Podcast: Blake Snyder Explains His Story Beats – Part Three

By on February 5, 2016 in Podcasts, Tools

In this newly discoSTC!_PodcastDvered audio of a Save the Cat!® Beat Sheet Workshop, Blake Snyder describes Bad Guys Close In, All Is Lost, Dark Night of the Soul, and Break into Three. Blake also talks about the caterpillar and the butterfly, the death of old ideas, and thesis, antithesis and synthesis = transformation. Unfortunately, the tape ends before he discusses the Finale beat, but we have attached a pdf of Chapter 3 from Blake’s third book, Save the Cat!® Strikes Back: More Trouble for Screenwriters to Get Into… and Out of, which includes a description of the Five-Point Finale. (Please note that Blake discusses the fifteenth beat, Final Image, in Part One of this podcast series, during his explanation of the Opening Image.)

These podcasts are brilliant so thanks for posting.

From this segment, I finally understand the concept of Thesis + Anthithesis –> Synthesis = Transformation. Never really got it before but Blake’s description is spot on. Would like more movie examples of this principle in action! 🙂

Hi Jayne. If you are looking for more movie examples of transformation, Blake Snyder’s Save the Cat Goes To the Movies is the best book you can get. It details all 15 beats in classic and modern movies and shows how the character changes. No better book on transformation is more clear than STC goes to the movies. Trust me, I looked for 12 years. This is the book.

Guys, another great podcast you found from blake. PLEASE GET MORE BECAUSE HIS EXCITEMENT AND ENERGY IS CONTAGIOUS EVEN AFTER ALL THESE YEARS. As many as you can find about Blake teaching the BS2, I will listen to every one of them

Unfortunately, Blake has passed away. But I agree, more would be great. Maybe they can find/dig up old/new footage.
