one of Blake's lightbulb moments

Our world changed last August 4, when Blake Snyder passed away. Since that dreary day, your support to keep his vision alive has been inspiring — and our future is bright.

In May, 2008, Blake was interviewed by Robin Mizell for an article she was writing for Screenwriter’s & Playwright’s Market. Robin has kindly given us permission to provide to you an audio of that far-ranging interview. We are proud to present this wonderful 47-minute “find” and hope Blake’s words will inspire you — and brighten your future.

I really miss Blake. Even though I never met him, he emailed me twice. I keep hoping that they discover a secret STC manuscript stashed in an old drawer.

  2. Brian says:

Thank you so much for releasing this audio interview. Just listened to it and it’s excellent. I’m hoping that other audio or video interviews or talks will surface and be made available to the public. I attended Blake’s speech last year at Pitchfest and wish that someone had recorded it.

  3. Blueberries says:

What a lovely photo. I could swear some fine art professional took it although I don’t know much about art.

  4. BJ says:

Brian — Blake felt that speech at Pitchfest was his best. He called me when it was over and said, “I nailed it! This was THE ONE!” If anyone reading this comment has or knows of a recording, please email me: bj@blakesnyder.com

Thanks so much for giving us this gift of Blake’s interview! I miss him! Thanks to Blake and all the amazing CATS here, my writing has improved and my life is much happier now that I can count so many writers here as my dear friends. Hugs Cats!

  6. Brian says:

    Hi BJ,

Yes Blake’s speech from Pitchfest 2009 was extraordinary. I actually had a digital tape recorder with me that day but figured that Blake wouldn’t want it recorded so I didn’t record it. Of course, now I wish I had. I think I recall seeing someone in the crowd recording it. He was so “on” that day with so much practical information and inspiration and being so charming and funny at the same time. He affirmed for me that day why we all love movies and screenwriting so much. It was one of those talks where you feel so thankful to have been there. I PRAY that someone actually did record it and still has it and is willing to share it with the rest of us.

    Brian

    BJ –

As one of Blake’s Cats I just listened to the interview you’ve posted – thanks so much. I also noted in the Comments that you are looking for anyone that may have recorded Blake’s talk at a recent Pitchfest (2009?). I recently met and have corresponded with one of the organizers of Pitchfest, Signe Olynyk. I just sent her an email asking whether she was aware of any recordings of the talk. I copied you and included your email address for her reply. I hope she has something. I’d love to hear it. Hearing Blake’s voice brought tears to my eyes.

    Cheers… Randy

  8. Sabrina Luna says:

I didn’t ‘discover’ Mr. Snyder’s book until a few months before he passed away, but I’m sincerely grateful for his “Save the Cat” material. Thanks for continuing his work through this website & interview. 🙂

  9. RJ says:

    Hi Fellow Cats,

I issue forth this challenge to all of us: Buy one of Blake’s books at the store and give it to someone on August 4th. Give it to someone in your class. Give it away on Craigslist. Or give it to that girl writing a screenplay at your local coffee shop. Let’s get all Oprah up in this piece and pay Blake forward to someone.

Thank you blakesnyder.com for keeping the blog/the business/the fire burning. Thank you Robin for giving us this interview. And thank you Blake for inspiring us all.

  10. Simon Maxwell says:

Just had to post a thought on this sad anniversary. I miss Blake as all of you do. I was lucky to have a few email exchanges with this great human being.

To honour him today, I will be reading his books and writing some comedy to pass on the joy of life which he offered all of us.

  11. Speedo says:

I can’t believe that you have been gone a year today. I wish I could sit in on the Beat Sheet Masters Class that you are running today with your blue shirt and white tennies. What is the save the cat moment in their beats? God Bless my friend.

  12. Nat Hitch says:

Yep RJ, I brought Save The Cat Strikes Back today after giving my copy away. I was lucky enough to meet Blake at his workshop in London. He made me see writing and the role of a writer in a completely new light. I miss his blogs and his positivity, but what he taught lives inside us.
Blake you are a shining star x

  13. Claudia says:

Like all of you, I still miss Blake… his absence has left a hole in my heart a mile wide. I first met him just after his book was published. #He was so excited about the potential for it to help writers. He spoke to a small group of writers at the Revolution Studios building. It was a wonderful, intimate meeting and he spoke from his heart… later I would learn the size of the group didn’t matter… Blake always spoke from his heart. I was also at the last Pitchfest event… we took both the morning and afternoon Master Class (I brought my cousin and even my dog, Apostrophe, for Blake to meet). Little did I know that it would be the last time I saw him.

I want to thank-you for keeping Blake’s dream alive. I know he wanted to create cat groups all over the world… and on the internet.

Blake, I know you are in Heaven and having a wonderful time. I pray we can make you proud, with our writing and by helping others. God Bless You.

  14. Jessica says:

Me too. I bought the first STC book and gave it to another writer. I never met Blake. I recently took his class from Master Cat Jose. It was wonderful. I highly recommend it. And so on this precious day I celebrated Blake and my son, Brock, who also was a screenwriter and passed away suddenly four months after Blake did and spent the day writing. It is amazing to me how much Blake understood writing and how to create the magic in story telling. We are here, Blake, writing and remembering you!

  15. Jaime Bengzon says:

Thank you for the interview. It was wonderful to be able to hear Blake in person again.

Thank you for everything, Blake. From Battle Beyond the Stars: “A life is not over, until all the good it has done, all the lives it has touched, are gone.” Blake continues to live on in us…

  16. Michael says:

    I miss Blake Snyder.
